Magical Consent

We believe that each individual is their own best authority…

“Because this is a teaching environment and part of my job is to offer concrete ways to proceed around rituals and magic for the safety of the participants, I want to share what personal authority means in this context.

Magic is real, so I will sometimes make parameters around magical or personal safety. I may, or others may, also set parameters around things like cultural appropriation as they come up.

Most importantly, you have the right to say “no” to anything. If you are uncomfortable for any reason, don’t do it. It is important to know that I believe that when you do this, you are modeling leadership and I support it.

When doing rituals or spells, even if it is not stated, it should always be done with the caveat of “for the good of all, and by the laws of free-will”.

We only do rituals for individuals with their consent.

Approaching magic with a general passion for an issue or a need is usually better than asking for a specific outcome. Unless that outcome has been asked for by a specific group. Like doing protection magic for BIPOC groups. In practice that means that we aren’t magically trying to coerce anyone to change, either on a personal level or a cultural level. Instead we are opening the way and asking for the change to occur, in the best way possible.

Those of us who are white have a long history of thinking we know how it should be. Magically, we try to surrender this notion.

Please remember that the way we do things is just one way, and not the best way. Experiment outside of class and in other groups. The magic and tools belong to you.”
